The uniform growth of the grass shoots are designed to create a basis for the development of a cover over the soil, which helps to retain its shape and structure.

A lot of effort is necessary in order to achieve such a result: preparation of the soil, and careful, attentive care of the lawn during the period of seed germination. Planting grass is considered one of the most meticulous and difficult jobs in landscaping. Our crew will help you save time, as our employees will have done this work for you. We have been caring for and preparing sod rolls for several years so you can have a perfect lawn in a matter of days because our employees have already done this work for you. We will install grass that has been tended to for several years, and prepared in rolls so that you can have the perfect lawn in a matter of days! The sod farms, from which we will bring the grass rolls, have taken care of all of the meticulous work in growing and caring for your lawn ahead of time for you.

The grass rolls are grown by specialized nursery companies. The period from sowing seeds to getting the finished sod for sale is three years. It takes two years of growing the sod in order for the grass to acquire thickness and density. During this time, the lawn builds up a strong root system, which will allow it to quickly take root during transplantation. Only in the 3rd year is the finished herbal “carpet”, together with its roots, cut into layers using special machines and mechanisms. The strips are immediately twisted so that the root system does not dry out, and they are transported in bays to the points of sale.

To Sod or To Seed?

The advantages of a sodded lawn, when compared to seeding, are obvious and significant:

- it makes it possible to plant the grass in the shortest amount of time, during any time from spring to late autumn, with instant results;

- the grass cover is high quality, grown for density and color intensity;

- the uniformity of the grass is achieved through the use of special sowing equipment, which is difficult to achieve and care for when the grass is sown manually;

- sod rolls are “ready-to-go”, and resistant to drought and mechanical damage after establishment;

- the sod rolls are practically devoid of weeds for two years, unlike with seeding, which needs constant, thorough weed maintenance;

- watering a sodded lawn is required less frequently, compared to growing the grass from seed;

- if irregularities or unevenness appear during the first three weeks after sod installation, it is possible to top up the soil and correct the defects;

Advantages (and some disadvantages) of a sodded lawn

- It is easy to maintain—a sodded lawn easily tolerates the cold, and cleaning a rolled lawn is much easier than cleaning a seed-grown lawn.

- The simplicity—sod rolls can grow well in places inaccessible to sunlight, and thanks to this, the sodded territory will have a bright and vibrant emerald color on all parts of the site. This ground cover can also be repaired—all you have to do is to cut off the damaged part of the sod and replace it with a new piece, however, you need to remember that the lawn will have to be watered periodically, especially parts that were replaced, in order to help them establish in the soil.

- Sodding is suitable for uneven surfaces. The rolled lawns can hide the uneven landscape in places of the site, making it visually more even.

- The price. On average, the cost of one roll of 1 square foot is $3-5, so it will be a significantly high price to have the sod installed. However, the high cost of this product compensates for itself in the future, with regards to the time, effort, and money saved on maintenance of the lawn, when compared to growing the grass from seeds.

A sodded lawn is a very convenient and profitable way to improve a property. Laying the turf will take very little time, and the result will delight the owners throughout the year. At the same time, one should not forget that a sodded lawn, as well as one grown from seed, requires care. Regular care will keep the “grass carpet” bright and vibrantly green.

Some facts about sod

The following facts are the important basics about sodding that may be new to you, or they may be a good review to refresh what you know about sod installation:

1. Don’t walk over your lawn when it is covered by snow. Walking a path on your lawn during the winter can damage the grass and prevent the spring shoots from growing in the trampled areas, leaving ugly bald spots. Paths throughout the garden should be planned and set in advance to prevent dry and damaged grass, even in the winter.

2. Compared with seeding a lawn, during the first few years after installation, a sodded lawn will have little few problems with weeds establishing themselves (unless of course they were rampant just before the installation, in which case re-sodding helps to manage the situation). You should always be able to recognize weeds when you see them pop up, and swiftly remove them—the most notorious offenders being dandelions and clover, which can multiply and spread rapidly and “drown out” the growth of your cultivated grass, spoiling the entire look of your lawn. Just cutting the grass isn’t enough to get rid of them, so you must be merciless when tearing them out of the soil by hand with as much of the root as possible. Remaining roots are still viable for a while before the plant gives up and dies, and so long as it produces some green leaves in which it can obtain energy from the sunlight, you will continue to have a problematic weed in your garden. When removing dandelions, try to do so before they go to seed and scatter all over your lawn, they will be quick to sprout and grow new shoots if given the opportunity.

3. Avoid walking on the freshly laid sod after an installation before the first mowing. During this period, right after the grass is laid, it will need to be watered thoroughly well, more than any other time the grass may require it—try having the installation just before a period of prolonged rains, which will water it thoroughly and prevent it from being tampled.

4. Cuttings should be removed from the lawn when you mow it, but small bits of cuttings that remain between the blades are ok to leave in, they will act as a bit of mulching and fertilize the ground when they decompose. However, it is advisable to avoid leaving the cuttings over your lawn as it prevents the live grass from having full access to the sunshine they need for energy, and can promote thatch.

5. Consider investing in the purchase of an electric or gasoline powered lawn mower—it is an indispensable help to gardeners that want to keep a beautiful, even lawn. Leaving room in your budget for this machine will not be superfluous, as you will need to mow your lawn often during the growing season of the grass. Keeping the grass at it’s healthy height of 2.5 cm-3.5 cm, while not letting it grow too long (don’t cut more than 1/3 of the size of the grass blade at any cutting, or it will weaken the grass) is A LOT of work to do by hand.

6. Do not destroy earthworms, they do not ruin the lawn. The more of them that live under a layer of turf, the healthier and stronger the grass will be. Vermicompost (earthworm droppings) is a powerful—and FREE—natural fertilizer.

7. Watering a mature lawn should only be done when necessary and only use  a sufficient amount of water for the grass. Too much moisture disturbs the natural balance of the soil, suffocates earthworms and compacts the topsoil, leading to the overgrowth of the sod layer. Keep in mind that it is better not to walk on a freshly watered, wet lawn.
